Take 5 with Sophie McCorry Day
Here is a quick 5-minute interview with top mummy blogger Sophie McCorry Day who speaks to us about her passion for interior design, connecting with nature, mental health advocacy and how motherhood changed her perspective on life.
Why did you decide to start blogging on top of your freelance work?
Perhaps predictably, I realised fairly soon after the birth of my son that my old career (and the commute) wouldn’t work empathetically with my new little family setup. Above the practicalities of my new role as a mother not meshing with formal employment and numerous postpartum health issues, there was this deep sense that now was the time for finding purpose, for trying to focus on what really mattered to me – and that thing was writing, especially about topics that affect the modern mother in the hope it might help. It was actually pretty choiceless.
Why motherhood?
As the adage goes, write what you know. I knew that whilst I am now a mother and this has opened up my life to a heap of changes and an identity in flux, I still cared deeply about good design and a gentler, slower approach to life and wellbeing. And I imagined there would be a lot of women like me, who not just because they are spending more time in their homes than they have possibly ever done, feel a newfound responsibility for how their own and their family’s life not only looks, but feels.
Who or what inspires you?
The sisterhood of brilliant mums I’ve become close to, arts, crafts and nature. Most of all though, my son. Babies are unwittingly fantastic self-help; they have this innate ability to draw out of you your best, most honest self and a clear perspective on what’s important.
What is your pitch to PRs? How would you prefer to be contacted by them?
My mission is to connect with and champion mums who share my passions for design, independent makers, interiors, nature and flowers, nourishing food and wellness, mental health advocacy and the importance of reconnecting with themselves. If you feel my audience would feel a kinship with your product or offering and it ‘fits’ Amotherstory’s aesthetics and aims, please email me at [email protected].
Where would you like to see your blog in one year from now?
As a go-to source of inspiration, nurturing thought and togetherness that makes mothers’ (and their family’s) lives better. As I am an illustrator, florist and maker myself, too, I hope to somehow bridge the gap between blog and lifestyle store.
