Paper round (up): upcoming changes across the national press

The Times (and The Sunday Times, Evening Standard, and The Independent)– could be a changin’ according to industry commentators and Bob Dylan. Though Bob probably wasn’t referring to the 2019 UK newspaper scene…

Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright [pictured], however, is fully briefed on changing times in print media, having been tasked with big decisions for resource sharing across The Times and The Sunday Times as well as editorial freedom at the Evening Standard and The Independent. Whether or not Page 3 girls should have stayed in The Sun may have grabbed more headlines than these head-scratchers so far, but the consequences here will have greater impact for the newspaper industry and how it works.

Changes for The Times and The Sunday Times would involve a blurring of boundary lines originally put in place between the two papers for Rupert Murdoch’s purchase back in 1981. These guidelines ensured separate teams, editors and newsrooms – and presumably lunchtime cliques and coffee rounds – for the publications. The application to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for amendments, if okayed by the Culture Secretary, would change that.

Will a future of combined news teams and mass redundancies automatically follow? Not necessarily. For The Sunday Times editor Martin Ivens, sharing editorial resources across the papers would ‘avoid duplication and invest more in the agenda-setting journalism we are famous for’. Times editor John Witherow sees it as a way to ‘stay competitive’ and ‘build a sustainable future for Times journalism’. Word is that the Culture Secretary is preparing to accept revised plans from the papers.

Also on the Government agenda is an inquiry into editorial independence at the Evening Standard and The Independent regarding the sale of 30% of holdings in the news brands to owner Evgeny Lebedev. So far, Wright hasn’t been persuaded that full editorial independence will continue across the papers, Lebedev having previously sold stakes in The Independent and 30% of Lebedev Holdings to Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel, a businessman with ties to Saudi Arabia’s state-owned bank. The Standard is reported to have made a loss of around £12m last year, resulting in cuts to the editorial team and a cost-saving move to merge print and digital operations. Depending on the inquiry’s findings, the future of both papers could change dramatically – lots for the Culture Secretary to take into consideration, and those of us working within the industry, too…

For those who work regularly with journalists across each of these papers, the future is uncertain. Editorial resource sharing means a greater potential reach for PRs pitching in content and ideas across multiple papers, but at the same time there’s a danger of losing valuable longstanding contacts if cuts are around the corner.  What is certain is that the print landscape will continue to shift and change as time marches on. And that coffee rounds at the big papers are going to take a long time, if resource sharing is the way things are going.

PR and Journalist ‘Blind Date’: When BLUE Communications met freelance transport journalist

Our latest professional pairing were Rhys Thomas, a consultant at BLUE Communications and Chris Lewis, a freelance journalist specialising in transport and logistics, and editor at Freight Business JournalHere’s what happened when they met for their PR and journalist lunch. 

How was your lunch?
Chris: Very enjoyable and productive.

Rhys: It was a fantastic experience and really underlined the power of a face-to-face meeting. In our increasingly digitalised lives, there might be the temptation to sneak back behind the shelter of an email inbox. But a ‘black book’ of contacts is as important as it has ever been for PR professionals, particularly in specific sectors like marine and energy which BLUE works within. I would encourage any PR professional to cultivate those contacts face-to-face and, when possible and prudent, ditch the emails and pick up the phone.

Did you learn anything new about their role? If so, what?
Chris: Not as such but discovered that he does PR for a couple of organisations relevant to my area who I weren’t aware of actually having any PR.

Rhys: The biggest takeaway was the complexity of Chris’ position as a freelancer; clearly, he has an immense knowledge of the market, but I was extremely impressed by his ability to silo knowledge to a very specific level – something that must be invaluable in editing and contributing to a range of titles across the same or similar sectors.

Were you surprised by anything they told you about their job?
Chris: Not really, other than the 2 above.

Rhys: Not surprised, but relieved to find in Chris a defender of independent journalism. We discussed at length the natural tension between publishers and editors, and finding a middle ground that helps a publication to thrive as a business whilst also maintaining its editorial integrity. Clearly, Chris is managing this very well across his publications and they stand as a tangible example of how, even in the digital world, good information is still a commodity that people will pay for.

If you could share one top tip from lunch what would it be?
Chris: Never refuse the offer of a new contact, and certainly not a free lunch!

Rhys: Definitely enter into conversations with an open mind. Chris’ sectors are aligned with BLUE’s, so I had some expectation of where the discussion would lead – but we ended up talking about so many industry-impacting trends that it actually opened doors for more clients than I had first expected.

Do you think this lunch will change how you interact with PRs/journalists in the future?
Chris: No, I don’t think so.

Rhys: No – in the sense that I, and BLUE as an organisation, has always understood the power of meeting someone face to face wherever possible, and engaging on the topics and issues that genuinely interest their readership. I would really encourage other PR and communications professionals to get out to industry conferences and make a point of meeting journalists first hand. Putting a face to a name can cement a long-term relationship that goes beyond what is possible over email. And no journalist is going to give you the time of day if you can’t demonstrate that you understand what their readership wants.

Did you disagree on anything? If so, what?
Chris: No, it was all very civilised.

Rhys: Thankfully – no! We both had similar interpretations about the ways that our sectors are heading. We also agreed on how integral shipping and logistics and their associated industries are to the world economy, which we both felt should heighten everyone’s awareness of the trends that are impacting those sectors.

If you could change one thing about PRs/journalists what would it be and why?
Chris: Stop trying to keep journalists and clients at arms’ length from each other through devices such as demanding questions in advance and doing written replies rather than proper interviews. However, Rhys fully agreed with me on this.

Rhys: Generally, BLUE is very lucky to work with a genuinely excellent crop of journalists across the sectors we work within. I think the dynamic cuts both ways: it is incumbent on PR and communications professionals to be understanding of the pressures that a publication or journalists face in their day-to-day work. How can we work together harmoniously? That is the question we all must answer to ensure our industries thrive.

Finally, do you think you’ll stay in touch?
Chris: Definitely. Rhys has at least a couple of clients that are right up my street.

Rhys: Definitely. Chris is an excellent contact with lots of knowledge about the marine and energy sectors in which BLUE operates, and we certainly see a few opportunities for Chris to meet our clients in the near future; in fact, we are already trying to sync diaries!

Political Headlines – Johnson considers downsizing and Hunt’s accused of macho nonsense

Today’s political headlines includes Johnson considering slashing the number of Government departments, Hunt accused of spouting macho nonsense, Corbyn calls for an inquiry into The Times and Hammond criticises candidates’ spending plans. 

Johnson considers reducing number of Government departments
The Daily Telegraph claims that Boris Johnson is considering proposals to reduce the number of Government departments. He has already backed merging the Department for International Development and the Foreign Office but is now being urged to consider abolishing up to seven other departments, in a move backed by supporters including Dominic Raab, Andrea Leadsom and Priti Patel. A source in the campaign told the paper that such a decision would have to wait until after Brexit had been delivered.

Hunt accused of ‘spouting macho nonsense’ over plan to cancel civil servants’ holidays
The Times says that Jeremy Hunt was yesterday accused of ‘spouting macho nonsense’ by Dave Penman, head of the FDA union which represents senior civil servants, after Hunt threatened to cancel all civil service leave in August unless departments convinced him that their no-deal plans were ‘on time and on track’. Hunt also said that he would decide on 30 September whether a deal was likely, and if it wasn’t, he would cease all talks with the EU and would instead focus on preparing for a no-deal Brexit.

Corbyn calls for independent inquiry into report by The Times
The Guardian reports Jeremy Corbyn has asked for an independent investigation into a report by The Times which claimed that it had been told by senior civil servants that he would have to stand down due to health issues. Writing to Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill, Corbyn said the claims ‘undermined confidence in the principle of civil service neutrality’.

Hammond criticises candidates’ spending plans
The Times says that Chancellor Philip Hammond has warned that the spending plans announced by the Conservative leadership contenders are at risk of ‘throwing away’ his party’s ‘reputation for fiscal responsibility’. He warned that the £25bn ‘fiscal firepower’ held in reserve would be needed to tackle a no-deal Brexit and that the candidates risked ‘delivering a bigger burden of debt to our children and our grandchildren’.

Heseltine report calls for more powers for metro mayors
The Financial Times carries details of a new report by Lord Heseltine, commissioned by the West Midlands Combined Authority, which calls for metro mayors to have their budgets and powers increased. He makes twenty proposals to help narrow the gap with London, including overseeing affordable housing construction, school performance and employment training.

Bercow blocks attempt to prevent public spending after a no-deal Brexit
The Daily Telegraph reports that John Bercow yesterday blocked an attempt by Dominic Grieve and Margaret Beckett to prevent spending on education and international development in the event of a no-deal Brexit by refusing to accept their amendment. A similar amendment, covering work and pensions, and housing, communities and local government, will be ruled on today. 

Local authorities warn of funding crisis
The Guardian says a survey by the Local Government Association shows that almost one in five local council leaders will be forced to put drastic spending controls in place in the next few months to avoid bankruptcy. One in three warned that they expected to be unable to meet their statutory obligations, such as adult social care, within the next three years.

Government considers mandatory climate risk reporting for listed firms
According to the Financial Times, the Government’s new green finance strategy, published today, will say that the Government is to explore introducing a mandatory requirement for listed companies and pension funds to declare their climate-related risks from 2022.

Brexit Party to fight every Westminster seat
The Guardian report on Nigel Farage saying that the Brexit Party will have candidates ready to fight in every Westminster constituency within days. Farage said that even in the event Boris Johnson is leading the Government and they are moving towards no-deal the Brexit Party will still battle hard. At an event in Birmingham the Brexit Party revealed their first 100 candidates to an audience of 5,000 activists.

Jeremy Hunt announces £6bn war chest for no-deal
Sky News report on remarks made by Jeremy Hunt where he has said that if he becomes Prime Minister he will have a £6bn fund for farmers and fisherman who export to Europe. Hunt is also expected to form a committee that will get the Government ready for a no-deal Brexit and prepared for WTO tariffs coming into effect.

Public sector pay freeze over under Johnson
The Independent report on Matt Hancock stating that Boris Johnson will scrap the public sector pay freeze. The Health Secretary said that those who work in the public sector will get a fair pay rise if Boris Johnson becomes PM. This could be a targeted campaign from the Johnson campaign as his leadership rival Jeremy Hunt oversaw the new contracts for junior doctors.

Claims about Corbyn’s health are ‘fake news’The Times re
port on head of the Unite union Len McCluskey describing concerns about Jeremy Corbyn’s health as ‘fake news’. This comes after it was reported that senior civil servants had become worried about Corbyn’s health. Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show McCluskey said the claims were fake news and a distortion.

Gordon Brown wants Theresa May to honour Conservative manifesto pledge on BBC TV licences
The Sun report on forming Prime Minister Gordon Brown calling on Theresa May to make sure that the Conservative manifesto promise of TV licenses being free for over 75s until 2022 is honoured. From June 2020 free TV licenses will be available to households where someone receives pension credit. The BBC has made this change as the cost of providing the licensers is going to be transferred to the broadcaster.

Pitch perfect: how PRs can own influencer marketing

PR and marketing are waging a war over who owns influencer marketing. So, what does the perfect email look like? For Monica, it’s this:

‘We’ve got a new product and we’d like you to feature it on your blog and Instagram feed. Attached is a description of the product and some photos.

‘We’d like two blog posts, one to be a dedicated review and one to be an editorial style post where the product is naturally featured. We’d like two Instagram photos which we’d like to re-share on our feed and we want them to be candid and natural photos similar to the style on the mood board attached. If you’re interested, please tell us your fee and your turnaround time for this content.’

There’s a couple of key points in this, which nearly every creator tells us when we ask about working with PRs:

  1. Make it clear what type of content you want featured and the channel you want it to be featured on
  2. Be upfront about budget, even if there isn’t any, because they need to know straight away to see if it fits with their business model
  3. Be clear about the product, service or campaign you want them to cover
  4. Include a brief – whether it’s a mood board like this example or a detailed description of your target market and positioning
  5. Don’t restrict the creative – being too specific turns a lot of creators off, they’ve built a relationship with their audience based on their authentic content and your brand needs to fit into that. Only their creativity will work.

These five points can help build a strong and fruitful relationship.

And as it’s all based on good communication, PRs can fly ahead of marketing to manage and maintain influencer outreach, and ultimately win the influencer marketing war.

Travel spotlight: Monica Stott, The Travel Hack

Monica Stott has been ranked once again with her blog The Travel Hack in the top 10 travel blogs. Originally started while camper vanning her way around Asia and New Zealand in 2009, The Travel Hack is now based in the UK but includes global adventures with Monica and her family.

Here, Monica tells us all about her use of different social media channels, the best places in the world for food, her advice for PRs – including the best example of a collaboration request – and her favourite other bloggers.

How do you describe what you do to other people?
It really depends who I’m talking to. I tell most people I’m a travel blogger and I feel like most people understand what that means. They usually assume my blog is a hobby rather than an established business and I often have an awkward couple of minutes where I try and tell them I actually make a living from blogging! I tell them I write about my travels and share advice, inspiration and guidance for anyone wanting to replicate my trip and that I work with travel and lifestyle brands to promote their products, services and destinations.

But if I’m talking to someone who is older or someone who doesn’t really use the internet then I tell them an ‘online travel writer’. This is essentially what I do, and it saves myself a lot of time and questions!

How do different social channels work with your blog?
I do use different social channels very differently.

Pinterest (if you can call it a social channel) drives a lot of traffic but I mostly have that all automated through Tailwind.

Facebook also drives a lot of traffic and has the most potential for something to go viral thanks to the ease of sharing posts, so I try to focus on creating posts people want to share.

Twitter seems to be mostly other travel bloggers so this is a great space for networking with my fellow bloggers and PRs.

Instagram is my favourite, although can be tricky with the algorithms and the need to spend a lot of time on the channel to see any major results. I see my Instagram grid like a shop window into my blog, one glance at this and you should get a feel for what The Travel Hack is all about. My grid is currently very blue and outdoorsy and this reflects a lot of the outdoor trips I’ve been taking recently.

Instagram stories is where the magic really happens. This is where I share everything and where I feel a real connection with my followers. This is where we chat and they ask questions and they get a glimpse into my whole life, not just my travels.

Do you think travel blogging will be your job forever?
I really hope so, but I think it will be VERY different in years to come. Travel blogging has changed so much over the past five years so it’s really exciting to see how it will change and evolve over the next five years.

Travel blogging is my dream job and it’s equally amazing and terrifying to find yourself doing your dream job! I feel so lucky but I’m constantly nervous about slipping and the dream shattering. I don’t think this is a bad thing though, it keeps me on my toes and pushes me to keep learning and evolving. Blogging is all about learning new skills and adapting with the ever-changing technologies available to us.

It’s a very exciting time to be a blogger and I can’t imagine doing anything else!

Where’s the best place in the world for street food?
I think everywhere has good street food these days because it’s such a huge trend and so many people are entrepreneurial foodies who want to start small businesses as side hustles to their day jobs.

But I’m going to have to say Thailand because this is where I properly discovered street food (many, many years ago!) I’d never had such fresh, tasty, delicious and cheap food before in my life! I hadn’t eaten much Thai food before my first trip to Thailand and I was instantly hooked on those creamy, spicy curries with sticky rice.

Which country has the friendliest locals?
Every country I’ve ever visited has the usual mix of horribly rude people and wonderfully welcoming people. I think people are essentially the same all over the world, it’s just some countries have chattier locals than others. I think it’s often down to confidence too.

I really enjoyed a trip to the Maldives when my son was nine-months-old because the locals were so friendly and welcoming with babies. We hadn’t expected it to be such a baby-friendly place to visit but they loved our son and were so kind to him. Everyone on the island knew his name and the hotel staff would offer to entertain him while we ate our dinner. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they react to children and the people in the Maldives were lovely.

What’s your favourite mode of transport?
Electronic bike! I’ve just returned from a trip to Switzerland where I did some mountain biking on an e-bike and it was amazing. You can either choose to put very little effort in and coast along without breaking a sweat, or you can put a normal amount of effort in and ride twice as fast! It’s so much fun and I really can’t wait for e-bikes to become more affordable so they’re an everyday mode of transport.

Other than e-bikes I’d have to say planes because they open up the whole world for us. Flying is incredible and it’s relatively inexpensive too, making the world such an accessible place for us.

Do you accept press releases?
Yes!

Like most bloggers I get over a thousand emails a day so I usually read a small percentage. If something sparks my interest, I’ll definitely read it and it often leads to something on the blog. I’m much more likely to read it if it comes from a PR already in my address book or someone I’ve worked with already.

I think press releases can be an opportunity many bloggers miss out on. It’s worth noting that when a brand or a PR sends you a press release, it’s because they have something they want to promote so it’s a great opportunity to get in touch and see if there’s a way to collaborate.

What are the best collaborations you’ve worked on?
I’m currently on a press trip with Jurys Inn, the hotel chain. It’s my second time working with them and I love working with this brand. They let me know what they want to achieve, the messaging they want to get across and the purpose of our collaboration, and then they allow me to make the creative content decisions. They trust me to incorporate their messaging into my content and, because it’s a brand I genuinely love and their whole ethos aligns perfectly with The Travel Hack, it’s a message I can incorporate naturally and with wholehearted enthusiasm!

I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I understand what my audience respond to and what type of content has the biggest impact, both for immediacy and longevity. I’ve worked with countless brands to incorporate their messaging into my content so I love it when I’m given the trust and the freedom to create the content I know my audience will respond to.

What advice would you give to brands and PRs reaching out to you?
Know what you want to get out of a collaboration and tell me straight away! I often spend days going back and forth on emails with brands while I try and decipher their cryptic messages and find out what they really want!

It’s so much easier when a brand emails and says, ‘We’ve got a new product and we’d like you to feature it on your blog and Instagram feed. Attached is a description of the product and some photos. We’d like two blog posts, one to be a dedicated review and one to be an editorial style post where the product is naturally featured. This would be the dream!

But if the brand is new to working with bloggers then I’m equally happy if they’re honest and say they don’t know what kind of content I can produce but they have a budget of X and they’d love to know what I could do with that and the kind of reach I would expect to achieve.

I get so many emails from brands saying, ‘Please send us some ideas about how we can collaborate.’ I’m definitely an ideas person and I could sit down and spend all day writing down a thousand ways we could collaborate, so it’s really nice when a brand are specific about what they want to get out of a collaboration and the size of the collaboration they have in mind. Once I know the purpose of the collaboration and the budget they have in mind, I can reply with a detailed proposal with clear examples and reports from similar campaigns I’ve worked on in the past.

What other blogs do you read?
I read so many!

I love Hand Luggage Only as they travel so much and have such a huge variety of incredible trips.

I like Twins that Travel for their honesty when it comes to travel and I love the way they encourage people who feel nervous or anxious to get out of their comfort zone and travel.

I love seeing the collaborations between Wanderlust Chloe and An Adventurous World. They have separate blogs and often travel separately but the newly engaged couple also make incredible videos when they’re together.

I like Katie Ellison for family travel and WishWishWish for stylish travel guides. I love girl tweets world for honest and funny travel posts, especially now she has an adorable baby boy. I follow Tigerlilly Quinn because she has this amazing way of making everything look so stylish! And I’ve recent discovered Emily Norris for family content and clever mum hacks!

And finally, I love The Girl Outdoors as her whole blog makes me want to put my walking boots on and go outside! So many ‘influencers’ are all about selling clothes and makeup but Sian’s blog is the opposite and is a breath of fresh air that always reminds me that happiness comes from the little things and being outdoors!

Digital innovation in the public sector

The Government is continuing to make use of digital innovation to progress a sector that is often criticised as lagging behind the private sector. A panel session on digital innovation in Government at the Public Sector Solutions Expo gave insight into how the Government is making best use of new technology while supporting SMEs across the UK.

Chaired by Sue Bateman, deputy director – innovation GDS at the Cabinet Office, the panel discussed how the Government keeps on top of developing technology and the importance of innovation to help consumers and users.

Joining Bateman on the panel were Sebastien Krier, policy advisor at the Office for Artificial Intelligence, and Ian Tester, head of product – GovTech Catalyst at Government Digital Service (GDS).

With artificial intelligence the current industry buzzword, Krier talked about how the Office for AI is creating a guide for how to use AI in the public sector. Covering best use, how to use it ethically, fairly and safely, and making sure it meets the users’ needs, the guide is a living product and Krier welcomes feedback from across the public sector.

Encouraging innovation and helping to build more efficient public services, Tester explained how GovTech Catalyst work to solve the challenges felt across local and central government and the wider public sector. By focusing on the problem first, rather than the solution, the aim is to work with companies to create effective and innovative products, so the end result is a product that works for everyone.

Since the launch of GovTech Catalyst, Tester said they’ve received 93 challenges from the public sector and, out of 416 supplier bids, they’ve started working with 35 different companies. By opening out the tender process to SMEs, the team has seen diversity in both technology and the people they are helping.

Political Headlines – Johnson’s latest campaign activity and the Salisbury attackers

Today’s political headlines includes Johnson’s no-deal Brexit budget, BBC censoring Johnson calling the French turds, May to urge Putin to hand over Salisbury attackers and Verhofdtadt attacks Johnson’s false promises. 

Johnson plans no-deal Brexit budget
According to The Times, Boris Johnson is preparing an emergency budget for a no-deal Brexit, including tax cuts, reforms to stamp duty and cutting regulation. He reportedly offered Sajid Javid the role of Chancellor at the weekend, with Javid expected to endorse him in the next fortnight. Johnson’s budget plans will be discussed next week at a meeting chaired by Sir Edward Lister, who is planning Johnson’s first 100 days as Prime Minister.

BBC censored Johnson calling the French ‘turds’
The Daily Mail claims that the BBC covered-up Boris Johnson accusing the French of being ‘turds’ about Brexit after the Foreign Office requested that it be removed from a fly-on-the-wall documentary. A Government memo said that broadcasting the remark would have made relations between the two countries ‘awkward’, while senior diplomats claimed that it would have made reaching a good Brexit deal even harder.

May to urge Putin to hand over Salisbury attackers
The Daily Telegraph says that Theresa May will use a meeting with Vladimir Putin at today’s G20 summit in Japan to urge him to hand over the suspected Salisbury attackers so that they can be ‘brought to justice’. She will also call on Russia to stop undermining ‘our collective security’. The Russian President has given an interview to the Financial Times in which he claimed that ‘the liberal idea has become obsolete’ but expressed hope that ‘a few preliminary steps’ could be made in restoring relations between the countries.

Verhofstadt attacks Johnson’s ‘false promises’
Writing in The Guardian, the European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, attacks Boris Johnson’s ‘false promises, pseudo-patriotism and foreigner-bashing’, saying his claims showed that he is ‘a man who continues to dissemble, exaggerate and disinform’.

Johnson refuses to rule out proroguing Parliament, says ministers must support no-deal
The Times says Boris Johnson has refused to rule out proroguing Parliament to enable a no-deal Brexit, despite his ally Liz Truss having claimed that Johnson had ruled it out. Johnson has also said that he will only appoint Cabinet ministers who are ‘reconciled’ to the idea of a no-deal Brexit, suggesting that he might be able to win round some opponents, such as Amber Rudd. He will today promise a ‘bold vision to rejuvenate our high streets’.

Leaked Home Office report criticises hostile environment policy
The Guardian says that a leaked version of a report into the causes of the Windrush scandal, commissioned by the Home Office, says that the department failed to follow its legal duty to counter racial discrimination when it implemented the hostile environment policy. The report says that the Home Office’s failure to effectively evaluate its policies’ effectiveness was ‘particularly reckless’ and recommends making an ‘unqualified apology’.

Vaz calls for Williamson decision to be reconsidered
The Daily Mirror reports that Labour MP Keith Vaz has called for the party’s decision to readmit Chris Williamson to be ‘reconsidered’, despite the fact that he sat on the panel which made the decision and voted for it, overruling the recommendations of party staff. He argues that as details of the meeting were leaked, the decisions it made ‘cannot stand’.

Government plans ‘fat tax’ on milkshakes
In an exclusiveThe Sun reports that the Government is planning a ‘fat tax’ by extending the ‘sugar tax’ to ‘sugary milk drinks’ such as milkshakes unless manufacturers improve their recipes. The proposal is contained in a new green paper on improving children’s health and air quality and was apparently inserted by Number 10.

Johnson pledges Australian-style immigration system
According to The Daily Telegraph, Boris Johnson has promised that he will bring in an Australian-style points-based immigration system in order to restore ‘public faith’. Migrants won’t be allowed to ‘cut ahead in the queue’ by taking jobs which could be done by British workers and won’t be entitled to benefits when they first arrive in the UK. He also called for the country to be ‘much more open’ to highly-skilled immigrants, but didn’t say what his immigration target would be as he wanted to consult the Migration Advisory Committee.

Social care bosses warn that services may be cut
The Guardian carries details of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services’ annual survey, which warns that the social care system is ‘not only failing financially, it is failing people’, putting them at risk of being denied basic support. Without urgent funding guarantees, local authorities might have to start decommissioning services this autumn. The association is calling for an urgent cross-party agreement.

New plan to block no-deal Brexit
The Times says that Dominic Grieve and Margaret Beckett are putting forward a plan to block Government spending if the new Prime Minister attempts a no-deal Brexit without Parliament’s approval. The move, expected to be backed by Labour in Tuesday’s vote, would make approval of the latest ‘estimates’ (Government expenditure) on policies including schools, benefits and aid contingent on MPs approving either a deal or no-deal.

Pro-cannabis Tory group is funded by cannabis manufacturers
The Daily Mail reports that a new pro-cannabis legalisation group, the Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group, is to launch today, chaired by the MP Crispin Blunt. The group, which is not affiliated to the party, has received £400,000 from firms which sell cannabis for recreational and medicinal use in Canada and the USA.

Johnson plans to turn on the ‘spending taps’ with Javid as Chancellor
The Financial Times says that Sajid Javid is emerging as Boris Johnson’s ‘favoured choice’ of Chancellor, as he has worked at the Treasury before and has links to the City. A source close to the Johnson campaign told the paper that Johnson ‘really is planning to turn on the spending taps’.

Hunt pledges to protect pensioners’ free TV licence
The Daily Mirror claims that a new poll shows that 85% of senior citizens would refuse to pay for a TV licence if they lose their entitlement to a free one. Jeremy Hunt has said that he would protect the benefit if he is elected, expressing concern that failing to do so ‘would be against our manifesto’.

Williamson readmitted by Labour
The Guardian says the Labour Party has readmitted the MP Chris Williamson, who had been suspended after he claimed that it was ‘too apologetic’ about antisemitism. Other MPs have expressed their displeasure, with Ruth Smeeth saying that she was ‘horrified’ while Jess Phillips claimed to be ‘disgusted’. Party investigators had recommended tougher sanctions, but were over-ruled by a panel which included MPs Keith Vaz and George Howarth.

Party conference recess may be scrapped
According to The Sun, talks are underway to axe the parliamentary recess for the party conferences in late September and early October. A Eurosceptic claimed that the move would to give ‘MPs more time to stop us leaving’, but a senior Tory told the paper that the new Prime Minister would need more time to get a deal through Parliament.

Last night, the great and the good from the PR industry came together to celebrate 29 winners, and each other, at the CIPR Excellence Awards 2019. The big winners of the night will perhaps come as no surprise – it was the agency that’s still on a very long hot streak, Taylor Herring.

Taylor Herring picked up three awards: its Gregory & Gregory campaign for Greggs picked up best Consumer Relations Campaign, its easyJet tackle gender bias in pilot recruitment campaign won best Travel, Leisure or Tourism campaign, while the agency itself scooped the top prize of the night when it was named Outstanding Public Relations Consultancy.

Vuelio spoke to James Herring, co-founder of the agency, last year and he gave detailed advice on how to win PR awards – something he’s been doing for many years now.

Vuelio was also delighted to see Mandy Sharp’s Tin Man pick up the STEM Campaign award for its work with The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on The Sound of Engineering. Tin Man and IET have both previously joined Vuelio for a webinar, again discussing how to create award-winning campaigns.

At the moment, we can say with confidence that we are not going anywhere. We love our work and love pouring our soul into our platforms. We can see other travel-related businesses as an extension to our blog and community. We definitely want to stay within the travel industry.

Where’s the best place for street food in the world?
Easy: Japan. Both our favourite cities, Tokyo and Kyoto offer incredible street food. If you are after more traditional or unique experiences, head to the Japanese country side and try the small food stalls at the city centres or at any landmark. Yum!

Which country has the friendliest locals?
We visited so many countries and while we had so many pleasant encounters, we think Greece had the friendliest locals. Warm, welcoming and genuinely curious.

What’s your favourite mode of transport?
Our car. I’m an avid driver and my husband is an avid passenger so we work really well. Road trips are our forte as driving by car enables us to see so many beautiful things along the way. It also provides us with the flexibility to create our own adventures.

We don’t usually. Sometimes, when press releases are in-tune with our blog and audience, we reach out to the PR to arrange a mutually beneficial marketing campaign.

What are the best collaborations you’ve worked on?
We recently did a promotional campaign for Destination Canada which was a lot of fun. We also really loved working on a true Intercontinental trip in partnership with Intercontinental Hotel Groups. We enjoy working on campaigns and collaborations where our marketing ideas are valued and taken into account. We have over a decade of experience working with digital agencies and both of us have a marketing background, thus it is refreshing when we are partnering up as marketers and not just content creators.

Kash is the man behind BudgetTraveller a new entry in the top 10 UK travel blogs. An experienced luxury-on-a-budget traveler, Kash is also an author and professional speaker. We caught up Kash to find out how many strings he has to bow, why South Africa has the friendliest people, his use of social and how he works with PRs.

How do you describe what you do to other people?
There are so many layers when it comes to working with a professional, experienced blogger – explaining the work we do is often my hardest challenge. I don’t thinks there is a word to describe the work I do.

I’m first and foremost a blogger, publisher and the man behind the BudgetTraveller blog. I’m also ‘the hostel guy’ and a published author; in August last year I published ‘The Grand Hostels: Luxury Hostels of the World’. I’m also a speaker and have been invited to speak at several digital tourism conferences on the topic of content and influencer marketing. In order for people to understand the value of our work I also became a content marketeer and developed a number of campaigns involving influencers some of which have won major tourism marketing awards. Examples of projects include MustLoveFestivals.com with Expedia, a project developed in partnership with 20 Destination Marketing Organisations (DMO) that included Visit Finland, Visit Austria, German National Tourism Office, BlogVille for Emilia Romagna & Blogmanay for Visit Scotland & Unique Events in partnership with iAmbassador and Film Traveller Cote d’Azur for Cote d’Azur Tourism.

How do different social channel work with your blog?
Instagram has been particularly effective in helping me building a community, especially stories which are great at keeping people posted about my recent travel adventures but also a place to ask questions, get ideas and learn more about travel trends that might be the focus of my blog in the future.

Twitter also has been great for cultivating a network – from bloggers and journalists to agencies, marketing directors of DMOs and brands. It’s a great source of contacts, work and also inspiration.

Facebook remains the best platform for seeding video content from campaigns but again requires some form of budget spend.

With all the platforms throttling organic reach increasingly, I’ve started to be invest less time in social and keeping it the bare minimum. The blog remains the key platform I focus on and I’ve also been focusing also on my newsletter, which offers a much better reach vs social.

Do you think travel blogging will be your job forever?
I can’t see myself doing anything else to be honest! I love helping people travel better, love writing and sharing my stories and obviously love how a life of travel has brought me into contact with so many amazing people from across several hemispheres. It is a job, a gift that continues to give and help me grow.

Where’s the best place for street food in the world?
It would be a tossup between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Nothing makes me happier than a bowl of steaming noodles or a Pad Thai or simple Khao Man Gai – Thai-style chicken rice. The variety of food stalls and the quality is mind boggling. Plus the price.

Which country has the friendliest locals?
South Africa. The most beautiful, warm and passionate people I’ve met in the world. I’ve been twice and each time, the people welcome me with open arms. I can’t wait to go back.

What’s your favourite mode of transport?
Give me a train any day, especially in Europe. Nothing beats seeing the world from a train window. With a beer or a glass of wine in hand. I can walk around, read a book and it gets from A to B with minimum fuss, even if it takes a few hours more. Flying is so stressful nowadays.

Do you accept press releases?
I welcome press releases that are tailored to my interests. I like when someone sending a press release has invested some time into reading my blog and at least knows my name. The lack of personalisation in press releases is what drives most bloggers mad. I also welcome introductions via Twitter or Instagram – much more effective than a bland drab press release.

What are the best collaborations you’ve worked on?
I’m really proud of the work I’ve done with my friends at iAmbassador to help launch the concept of BlogVille back in 2013 for the Emilia Romagna Tourism Board-project that continues to grow and develop to this day and has spawned several similar ideas. I’ve had a fantastic relationship with the German National Tourism Office over the last few years – we’ve collaborated on a number of wonderful creative content campaigns ranging from promoting the country as a leading youth tourism destination to one that focused on the country’s amazing wealth of street art. Last Autumn I completed a month long residency in Latvia where I created a guide on how to enjoy the country on a budget. The tourism board was very supportive of my ideas and gave me complete creative freedom to create the content-still a rare thing in the world of brand collaborations.

What advice would you give to PRs/brands reaching out to you?
Be open to ideas and also send me yours – let’s start the creative process. Don’t come with a fixed brief and tie me down in umpteen deliverables; that can kill the creativity and passion within me or any decent digital storyteller. Please do take the time to read my blog and DO reach out to me on social. I’m always up for a beer or coffee so let’s meet up if possible.

Today’s political headlines includes Johnson defending his right to privacy, Hunt promising £15bn defence spending, Labour MPs given a fortnight to decide if they want to stand again and financial reporting on Johnson’s proposed tax cuts. 

Johnson defends right to privacy as donor demands explanation
The Daily Telegraph says that Boris Johnson has defended his right to privacy saying that it was ‘unfair’ to drag his ‘loved ones’ into things, but has been accused of hypocrisy after photos of him holding hands with his girlfriend were passed to the press. He used a BBC interview last night to relaunch his campaign for the leadership and will attend a series of events in Surrey and South London today, after criticism from a number of sources including leading party donor John Griffin, who said that members ‘deserve an explanation’.

Hunt promises £15bn defence spending
The Times reports that Jeremy Hunt is to announce that he will increase defence spending by £15bn if he becomes Prime Minister, ensuring that it reaches 2.5% of GDP in the next five years. However, he has not given a detailed explanation of how this will be funded. The money would be used to increase the UK’s presence in the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions and to expand the UK’s cyber-security defences.

Labour MPs given a fortnight to decide if they want to stand again
The Guardian reports that the Labour Party has given its MPs a fortnight to decide if they wish to stand again at the next general election. Following a rule change last year, those who wish to restand will need to secure the support of two-thirds of local branches and local trade union branches; if they don’t, they can be challenged by other candidates.

Johnson tax cuts could cost £20bn and would mostly benefit the rich
The Financial Times carries details of new analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which says that Boris Johnson’s proposed tax cuts could cost up to £20bn a year and would mostly benefit richer households. Tom Waters from the thinktank said it was ‘not clear that spending such sums on tax cuts is compatible with both ending austerity in public spending and prudent management of the public finances’.

Top jobs disproportionately held by private school pupils
The Guardian says that a new study by the Sutton Trust and the Social Mobility Commission shows that members of the UK’s elite, who hold top jobs in politics, the judiciary, the media and business are five times more likely to have attended a private school than the population as a whole. Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner said that Labour would give ‘every child the chance to flourish, not just a lucky few’.

Ireland under pressure from other EU countries over no-deal Brexit plans
The Daily Telegraph claims that Ireland is coming under pressure from six other EU countries, including France and Germany, to detail how it would manage a no-deal Brexit as they are concerned that this may now be unavoidable. The countries are said to fear that Ireland could pose a threat to the integrity of the single market.

May to make everyone eligible for sick pay
The Sun reports that Theresa May is to announce that sick pay will be extended to everyone. Companies that treat their staff well will be given a ‘conditional rebate’. The measure forms part of May’s attempt to establish a legacy, with the Government also considering higher accessibility standards for new homes and increased support for disability benefit recipients.

Davies reselected despite recall petition
The Times reports that the Conservatives have selected Chris Davies as their candidate for the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, despite it having been caused by a recall petition triggered after he admitted submitting two false expenses invoices. He said that he was ‘the right person’, despite almost one in five constituents having backed the petition.

5 PR tips from the hotel industry

Frank has compiled a list of AM+A’s top tips for creating and putting into action an effective hotel PR and marketing strategy, which the whole PR industry can benefit from. From adopting an integrated approach to channelling your inner journalist, every successful PR and marketing campaign should consider these five steps.

1. Regularly update creative strategies
The media, PR and marketing industries are extremely fluid. Regular creative brainstorms are useful for keeping your brand on trend. Launching a hotel or product is easy, keeping it in the press is not. Creating a major annual event or unique promotion will help maintain exposure. Big events should also be supplemented with smaller, tactical ideas. This is a fine line to tread. You want to keep your brand in the media and engaged with customers without bombarding journalists/ audiences to the point of apathy.

2. An organised integrated PR & digital approach
The key to any successful PR campaign is organisation. It’s true that we must react to news and trends as they emerge, but the best campaigns involve a proactive 12 to 18 month plan incorporating key dates throughout the year from national days to major holidays. Creating smaller, six-month plans allows you to regularly catch long lead media and consistently keep your hotel in the news.

3. Build a network of influencers
As social media continues to hold its position, the importance of building a high-quality influencer network cannot be overstated. According to Havas Group’s Meaningful Brands 2019 report, 81% of brands sold across Europe could disappear and consumers would not care. Building a trustworthy brand is therefore vital for engaging consumers. Create a rapport with your influencers, bring them back time and time again and utilise their contacts to create an even greater reach for your brand.

Influencer marketing is still a murky area but there are a few pointers to help you get ahead: to ensure you make the most out of the relationship include looking for an engagement rate of 4% – 6% on posts; define expectations beforehand to ensure they are met; and aim to state what you want before working with them, so if you want 10 photos, ask for 10 photos.

It’s important to research your influencers and ensure they’re a good fit for your target audience to produce content that maximises your assets.

4. Think like a journalist and blogger

To generate publicity for your brand, try to understand what appeals to journalists and online audiences – and what doesn’t. By thinking like a journalist, you can tailor your campaign and present your assets in a way that is far more likely to be picked up. To be able to think like a journalist or your audiences, you should be constantly monitoring media not just within your industry, but a wide variety. Devour the media, find the angles behind features and learn to spot current trends, journalists love anything new and anything that taps into their calendars. Winning the media over is vital to a successful marketing campaign.

5. Maximise your assets and production
Even if you use all of these tactics and create an innovative, well-structured campaign, you cannot succeed if you don’t have the assets in place to maximise your product. Stay on brand and build up a vault of high-quality images, videos, blog posts, graphics, animations, infographics and articles while ensuring any logos and branding materials are designed to the highest standard. This should be your starting point for any successful campaign.

Political Headlines – Hunt calls Johnson a coward in Tory leadership latest

Today’s political headlines includes Hunt accusing Johnson of cowardice, Johnson and Symonds have been driven out of their flat, and Johnson’s Brexit stance while being contradicted over no-deal tariff claims. 

Hunt accuses Johnson of cowardice
Writing in The Times, Jeremy Hunt accuses Boris Johnson of being a ‘coward’ who is willing to ‘slink through the back door’ of 10 Downing Street while avoiding being questioned, telling him to ‘man up’. He has been refusing to provide an explanation of the incident at the flat he shares with his partner, Carrie Symonds, which led to police being called after neighbours heard screaming. Johnson has also only agreed to participate in two broadcast debates, both of which will only take place after ballot papers are sent to members.

Anarchists drive Johnson and Symonds out of flat
According to the Daily Mail, Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have been forced to go into hiding after anarchists from the group Class War staged a protest outside their flat, with a friend of the couple telling the paper that the couple have ‘a very loving and stable relationship’ and have ‘spent the weekend together’. The Daily Mirror says that Johnson’s friends claim that he is ‘yearning’ to be with his estranged wife, while The Sun claims that the row followed a series of four over the last six weeks in what a friend described as ‘an incredibly volatile relationship’, including the couple nearly splitting up earlier this month.

Johnson says he won’t ‘bottle’ Brexit
Boris Johnson has used his column in The Daily Telegraph to promise that he won’t ‘bottle’ Brexit and that ‘we can, we must and we will leave’ the European Union on 31 October. He also claims that once Brexit has been completed, the focus should be to ‘turbocharge’ the economy, promising higher pay not higher taxes.

Cox and Fox contradict Johnson over no-deal tariff claims
The Financial Times claims Attorney-General Geoffrey Cox has told the Government that, despite claims by Boris Johnson, the UK would probably not be able to maintain its existing tariff-free trade with the EU in the event of a no-deal Brexit, even for a time-limited period. Cox’s stance has also been backed by International Trade Secretary Liam Fox.

Hunt says UK would consider joining US attack on Iran
In an exclusive, the Daily Mail reports that Foreign Secretary and leadership contender Jeremy Hunt has said that the UK would consider joining a US-led military attack on Iran, but that it would do so ‘on a case-by-case basis’. He added that Iran should ‘stop its destabilising activity throughout the Middle East’ and said that it was ‘almost certainly’ responsible for recent sabotage to oil tankers.

NHS boss raises prospect of compulsory tax on gambling firms
The Times says that Simon Stevens, the head of NHS England, has said that the voluntary levy on the gambling industry wasn’t raising enough to pay for the treatment of addicts and ‘the possibility of a mandatory levy’ should be left open. Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said he was ‘determined to do everything I can to help anyone affected’.

Most types of Brexit to worsen UK’s finances
The Guardian reports that a new report by the UK in a Changing Europe thinktank finds that most types of Brexit would lead to the UK’s finances becoming worse, giving the country less capacity to tackle issues such as child poverty, social care and left-behind communities.

Report claims current technology could make backstop obsolete
The Daily Telegraph carries details of a new report by the thinktank Prosperity UK, which claims that a hard border on the island of Ireland could be prevented using existing technology to deliver ‘invisible’ customs checks, making the backstop ‘obsolete’ within three years. The report was led by Nicky Morgan and Greg Hands and is supported by Brexiteers such as Iain Duncan Smith, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Steve Baker.

CIPR AGM hears from Reuters Institute’s Meera Selva

The CIPR held its AGM last night, reflecting on last year’s results, the Institute’s accounts and presenting this year’s Sir Stephen Tallents Medal to Laura Sutherland (congratulations from all at Vuelio!). Following official business, the audience heard from Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s Meera Selva, who talked through the current state of digital journalism around the world.

Selva discussed the Digital News Report, which is based on 75,000 respondents in 38 countries.

The general theme of the report is one of concern for digital media, which is still struggling to keep up with audience requirements and societal pressure. While some mediums are doing better than others – the popularity of podcasting in particularly is rapidly increasing – there’s still issues of trust, payment and competition.

Selva pointed out that people seem to be putting more trust in news brands, but it is in established brands while others are seen as suspicious. And while more individuals in the US, UK and Nordic countries are willing to pay for quality news, the technology is currently creating a barrier, as readers too often come up against paywall login screens.

A demand for a ‘Spotify for news’, where one login gives you permanent access to all paywalled brands, is very unlikely to materialise according to Selva, as there will always be publishers that believe readers will come directly to them who don’t want to subsidise lesser brands.

There’s also an issue of competition, which is increasingly likely to come from outside traditional news organisations. In the US, most people have one online subscription, but that isn’t just for news. For example, a US citizen might make a choice between the Wall Street Journal or Netflix. Again, funding models have not found a way to compete with slick entertainment services and are therefore falling behind.

Selva also discussed the impact social media has had on news, where people are increasingly likely to access their news via social platforms rather than go directly to news sites. As such, algorithms and tech companies are the de facto news editors while publishers are having to become SEO wizards.

This is a problem for PR and communications because it allows fake news and misinformation to spread unchecked and makes the ‘official line’ of communication harder to determine.

The PR industry should be taking the decline of trust in the media and its reduced ability to hold those in power to account very seriously – without a robust, trusted, independent media, the PR industry cannot survive to serve its current function.

One of the questions our clients often ask us is how to calculate the value of editorial coverage. In the past, the accepted measure was Advertising Value Equivalent (AVE) but this is now held in such low esteem that PR industry bodies actively campaign against its use.

AVE is flawed because it doesn’t consider the influence that editorial coverage has beyond advertising. It doesn’t consider that impact on a target audience is determined by the sentiment of coverage or the type (and reach) of a publication. Above all, in a world where Google ranking is king, AVE doesn’t consider search engine optimisation (SEO) benefit.

So, what’s the alternative? The Barcelona Principles 2.0 went a long way to improving how the industry considers evaluation. It reinforced our view that the value of PR is in terms of outcome not output.

To understand outcome, at the beginning of any activity you must define the key audiences you want to reach and the action you want PR activity to prompt. It could be a shift in awareness, understanding or engagement, which is then evaluated using quantitative measures such as website traffic, downloads of content or interactions on social media. For a complete picture, these should be combined with qualitative research into likelihood to recommend and buy.

By aligning PR to strategic targets, the value of PR is in terms of impact against ‘bottom line’ beyond an arbitrary measure of AVE. There’s no doubt this is a more involved approach, but by applying it you’ll create irrefutable evidence of the importance of PR to the ambition of the organisation. It helps move PR from being considered a ‘nice to have’ to essential for overall success.

Today’s political headlines includes Johnson supporters trying to knock out Gove, Stewart knocked out, Javid wants to be Johnson’s Chancellor and BBC debate questioners suspended.  

Johnson supporters to try to knock out Gove
The Daily Telegraph claims that Boris Johnson’s supporters will try to knock Michael Gove out of the leadership race today, with one claiming that they wanted him to be ‘humiliated’. They intend to lend Sajid Javid enough votes in this morning’s round to eliminate Gove and are pressuring former supporters of Rory Stewart to back Javid or Jeremy Hunt. Johnson’s supporters believe that Hunt will be the easiest to beat in a head-to-head contest.

Stewart knocked out of leadership contest
The Guardian reports that Rory Stewart was eliminated from the Conservative leadership contest last night, having lost ten votes since the previous round. This prompted speculation that he might have previously been lent votes by Boris Johnson in order to ensure that Dominic Raab was eliminated. Stewart said that ‘all sorts of things might be happening in strange secret ballots’.

Javid wants to be Johnson’s Chancellor, rivals claim
The Times claims that according to his rivals Sajid Javid wants to be Boris Johnson’s Chancellor. According to Javid’s allies, Johnson spend yesterday trying to persuade him to pull out and endorse Johnson instead, but there weren’t any face-to-face talks. He has said that he is the ‘change candidate’ and will not be ‘pulling out’.

Two BBC debate questioners suspended
The Daily Mail says two of the questioners from the BBC’s Conservative leadership debate have been suspended from their jobs over offensive social media posts which the corporation’s vetting didn’t find. Abdullah Patel, the deputy head of a primary school, was suspended over tweets blaming women for rape and containing antisemitism, while Aman Thakar, who used to work for Labour, has been suspended from the law firm he works for after he tweeted that Hitler’s most harmful legacy was his ‘abuse of nationalism’. Iain Duncan Smith said there was ‘clear bias’ against the Tories and called for Ofcom to investigate.

Johnson tells rivals they don’t disagree on ‘much’
According to The Sun, Boris Johnson’s stance on Brexit is being questioned after he was overheard telling his opponents that ‘we don’t disagree on that much’ following the leadership debate on Tuesday, adding that they ‘hardly’ disagreed on dates. The candidates’ microphones were still attached as the exchange happened while they left the studio.

Corbyn rejects calls to move to pro-remain stance
The Guardian claims that Corbyn used yesterday’s shadow cabinet meeting to indicate that he was not happy to move to a more pro-remain stance despite pressure, including from John McDonnell, telling attendees that he had been getting inspiration from Harold Wilson’s autobiography. Wilson allowed ministers to campaign on both sides of the referendum.

Hammond to accuse candidates of not being realistic
The Financial Times says Chancellor Philip Hammond will use a speech at Mansion House to say he is trying to prevent a no-deal Brexit and none of the leadership contenders is being realistic. He will add that ‘if the new Prime Minister cannot end the deadlock in parliament, then he will have to explore other democratic mechanisms to break the impasse’.

Living standards improvements have stalled, thinktank says
The Sun carries details of a new report by the Resolution Foundation which finds that 18-29 year olds are spending £23 a week less on recreation compared to 20 years ago as basics rise in cost, but pensioners are spending £47 more due to them working longer and the ‘triple lock’. David Willetts of the thinktank said that ‘big living standards gains that each generation used to enjoy over their predecessors have stalled’.

Today’s political headlines includes rivals raising the heat on Johnson, Corbyn to set out Labour’s Brexit stance, Raab’s campaign manager accuses Tory MPs of pretending to support him and Farage says he could do a deal with Johnson. 

Rivals raise heat on Johnson
The Times says rival leadership candidates used last night’s debate to raise the heat on Boris Johnson, who softened his stance on Brexit, moved away from his suggested tax cuts on high earners and refused to commit to blocking Heathrow expansion. Rory Stewart also came under scrutiny, later agreeing that his performance was ‘lacklustre’. In the second round of voting, Johnson got 126 votes while Dominic Raab was eliminated. Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove and Sajid Javid all grew support marginally, but Stewart’s votes nearly doubled.

Corbyn to set out Labour’s Brexit stance
The Guardian reports that in the ‘coming days’ Jeremy Corbyn will set out Labour’s latest Brexit stance in a speech, but is unlikely to back deputy leader Tom Watson’s calls for the party to adopt a more pro-remain approach. Instead he will develop his existing position of a public vote on any Brexit deal, although some shadow cabinet members are concerned about the impact this would have in their constituencies.

Raab’s campaign manager accuses Tory MPs of pretending to support him
The Times says that Sr Hugo Swire, Dominic Raab’s campaign manager, has said that his elimination was ‘a surprise and a big disappointment’, accusing MPs of pretending to support Raab. He said that most of Raab’s backers were now likely to transfer their support to Boris Johnson as it was ‘difficult to see them not backing’ a hard-Brexiteer.

Farage says he could do deal with Johnson
Speaking at an event organised by The Daily Telegraph, Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has indicated that he could form an election pact with Boris Johnson, saying that if Johnson chose to fight an election backing a no-deal Brexit there ‘is a deal that could be done’ which would lead to ‘a massive, massive majority’.

Hammond threatens to resign over school funding plan
The Sun says that Chancellor Philip Hammond openly threatened his resignation yesterday over a dispute with Theresa May about plans to boost school funding by £27bn. Asked if he had quit, he said ‘no, not yet’. Cabinet ministers have indicated to the paper they are backing Hammond and believe the decision on the plans should be left to May’s successor.

Johnson rebuilds links with business leaders
The Financial Times says Boris Johnson held a private breakfast with business leaders yesterday, accompanied by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss, in an attempt to rebuild his relationship with them after his ‘fuck business’ remarks last year. He told attendees these had been taken out of context and pointed to his record as Mayor of London.

Khan accuses Tory candidates of adopting far right language
The Guardian says Sadiq Khan is to accuse Tory leadership contenders of adopting the language of the far right, warning that it could lead to events such as the massacre at the mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. He will describe the Conservatives’ approach to Islamophobia as ‘utterly shameful’. The paper adds that during yesterday’s debate Sajid Javid got the other candidates to commit to an investigation into Islamophobia in the party.

Labour to announce plans for warnings on alcohol
The Sun reports that Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Jon Ashworth is to announce plans to make alcohol carry warnings about the dangers of drinking too much, with details of calories and national drinking guidelines. He will warn that ‘the current voluntary approach is simply not fit for purpose’, but Chris Snowdon of the Institute of Economic Affairs claimed that ‘the nanny statists are at it again’.

How to manage crisis comms for terrorist related events

New guidance has been published by the CIPR and CPNI for best practice communication management before, during and after terrorist incidents.

The CIPR has partnered with the Government’s Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) on the 38-page guide, which features a communications toolkit designed to help PR professionals mitigate the harmful effects of terrorist incidents on brands, businesses and communities.

The guidance explains that communications can help deter terrorists and encourages professionals to be wary of the diverse threats facing organisations, from left- and right-wing terrorism to cybercrime and hacktivism.

The comprehensive toolkit is a valuable resource for anyone working in communications (in any industry) and includes guidance on working with the police, the steps to takes before, during and after an incident, and how to deal with different types of terror-related events.

It is informed by CPNI research based on interviews with 30 communications heads and security professionals from 24 organisations that have experienced a terrorist-related incident. The research found that the success of communication is often determined by the strength of security culture within the organisation. As a result, the guidance encourages PR professionals to align closely with the security function as part of crisis preparations.

Emma Leech, president of the CIPR, said: ‘The fear and horror we feel when people and places we work for or represent are targeted by terrorists has to be separated from the way we manage communication in a time of unique crisis. It demands a clear and calm response that demonstrates empathy and understanding for those affected by these tragic incidents.

‘It is imperative that we consider the operational and emotional needs of the organisation and its stakeholders, and allow sufficient time for planning and recovery. I’d like to thank the CPNI for working closely with the CIPR on the guide and hope that the lessons we’ve highlighted provide support and assurance to PR professionals across the UK.’

Sally Alsop, MD of Agfora, which worked on the research, said: ‘Agfora interviewed 30 comms professionals in high risk businesses; 13 had been directly involved in a major crisis. Although generally well prepared, they readily admit they could always do more. The assumption is that a terror related crisis should be treated like any other, but the research shows there are clear differences and demand for specific guidance. Participants shared their experiences with us, the lessons they learned and tips for fellow colleagues who might one day face such an incident.’
