Political Updates 28th May 2019
This week’s Political Updates covers moves and changes at all levels of government.
UK Government
Andrea Leadsom has resigned as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.
Mel Stride was appointed as the new Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.
Jesse Norman has replaced Mel Stride as Paymaster General and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
Michael Ellis has replaced Jesse Norman as Minister of State for the Department of Transport.
Rebecca Pow has replaced Michael Ellis as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Lady Rachael Robathan and Natalie Campbell have been reappointed to the National Lottery Community Fund board for four years from 1 June 2019.
Charlotte Briscall has been appointed as the Customer Experience, Digital and Data Director, due to start in September.
Harry Bain has been reappointed as a trustee for five years, starting from 22 September.
Jonathan Hall QC was appointed as the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation.
Rita French has been announced as the Foreign Secretary’s International Ambassador for Human Rights.
Michael Brodie is set to take-over as CEO of Business Services Authority from Alistair McDonald this summer.
Sir Craig Mackey, Andy Cooper, Graham Evans and Kenna Kintrea have been appointed to the British transport Authority Board.
Alison Morgan QC and William Emlyn Jones were appointed to the Attorney General’s Senior Treasury Council, for three years.
Gareth Wilson begins his role as Deputy Chief Constable.
Clare Hollingsworth and Andrew Duff were both appointed to the board of the UK Government Investment Ltd, Hollingworth begins her role immediately and Duff begins in April. Simon Paley will be stepping down in May.
House of Lords
Lord Cashman resigned from the Labour Party, he now sits as non-affiliated.
A new House of Lords Committee, Conduct Committee, was created. Lord Mance was appointed as Char and members include, Baroness Anelay of St Johns, Lord Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood, Baroness Donaghy and Baroness Hussein-Ece.
Lord Ouseley retired from the House of Lords on 24 May.
National Assembly for Wales
New Brexit Party members include Caroline Jones, Mark Reckless, Mandy Jones and David J Rowlands.
Caroline Jones is no longer a member of the Culture Committee.
Conservative Party
On Friday 24th May 2019, Theresa May announced her resignation as Prime Minister and Conservative Leader, May will step down from the role on the 7th June.
Helen Grant has resigned as Vice-chair of the Communities.
UKIP
Mike Hookem has resigned as Deputy Leader.
European Parliament
This week, there is an evaluation of European election results.
