House of Commons
Copeland by-election
- Gillian Troughton has been selected by the Labour Party to contest the by-election.
- Paul Nuttall the Leader of the UKIP will be his party’s candidate for the by-election.
- The Green Party will select their candidate for the by-election on Tuesday 24th January.
Select Committees
- Women and Equalities: Lucy Allan (CON) joined; Jo Churchill (CON) left.
- Scottish Affairs: Craig Williams (CON) joined; Dr Dan Poulter (CON) left.
House of Lords
- Lord Mackay of Drumadoon resigned from the House of Lords on 17th January.
- Baroness Heyhoe Flint passed away on 18th January.
Northern Ireland Assembly
- The Assembly will sit for the final time on 25th January, it will be dissolved on the 26th January.
- The election for the Assembly will be held on 2nd March.
- Martin McGuinness has announced he will stand down from the Assembly at the coming election.
- Catherine Seeley MLA has announced she will stand down at the election
Local Government
- Dave Stewart has been elected as the leader of Isle of Wight Council following the resignation of Jonathan Bacon on 16th January.
European Parliament
This week the Members of the European Parliament will be based in Brussels for Committee meetings.
- Antonio Tajani of the European People’s Party has been elected President of the European Parliament. He achieved a majority of votes on the third round of voting.
