News UK’s Summer School Highlights Changing Face of Journalism
News UK, publishers of The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times, is offering aspiring journalists and digital developers the opportunity to attend an expenses-paid, week-long summer school.
The summer school will be open to applicants between the ages of 18 and 25 with 15 spaces available for journalists and a further 10 for developers.
By inviting developers to join the course demonstrates a clear shake-up of the programme where previous attendees simply worked on creating a newspaper. This year’s event aims to build a “multimedia digital news product”.
According to News UK: “Storytelling is evolving and technology has an important part to play. There has never been a greater need for journalism to make sense of a fast-changing world and to challenge fake information.
“During the digital news summer school, there will be journalism sessions from top editorial talent across The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times throughout the week. Meanwhile, News UK Technology and video ad tech company Unruly are teaming up with Amazon Web Services to deliver a series of workshops, masterclasses and tutorials for the developers and designers.”
Digital disruptive technologies and how they impact on news gathering and storytelling are a clear priority at News UK and the importance of the summer school to identify and nurture new talent in this is clearly an important issue, garnering attention all the way to the top of the organisation.
Rebekah Brooks, News UK’s chief executive, said: “Journalists need to work hand in hand with technologists to deliver innovative and engaging products for tomorrow’s reader. The digital summer school will give a new generation the skills to pursue a career in digital media and news gathering.”
Applications for the summer school, which will run from August 20-25, must be submitted before May 14. For more information, check out: https://academy.news.co.uk/summer-school/.
