Journalist Spotlight: Nicola Joyce
Freelance journalist Nicola Joyce specialises in writing about sport, fitness, nutrition and health. She has contributed to publications ranging from Good Housekeeping, Muscle & Fitness, Body Fit and Coast to Women’s Running, Women’s Fitness, Sportsister and Triathlete’s World. Nicola says “I’m a passionate sportsperson, and I like to ‘walk the talk’. I’ve swum the English Channel twice, and around Jersey once, have taken part in marathons and triathlons and I now compete as a natural bodybuilder, reaching 2nd place in the British Final in 2011.”
With the London 2012 Olympics fast approaching, Nicola says she is looking forward to covering various aspects of the events and will work closely with sport and leisure PRs in order to stay updated with the latest developments. “I’m currently seeking 2012-hopefuls from any sport (Olympic or Paralympic athletes) to interview for Round and About magazine.” (PRs should note that athletes must live or train within the areas shown on this map)
Nicola appreciates the many sport, nutrition and fitness PRs who help her find case studies, product information and expert comment. She likes to receive information relating to gym based fitness, bodybuilding, sports nutrition, triathlon, cycling, running, swimming, open-water swimming, nutrition and health, the fitness industry and sportspeople. “I advise PRs to listen to/read requests and only respond if your client fits the bill: nice as it is to hear about a golf product, if the journalist’s request was for products to do with tennis, it’s not going to be helpful for either party.” Nicola also works with PRs for kit and product reviews on her blog and is happy to hear from any PR who has a product which may be of interest to her blog readers. “I believe good PRs are worth their weight in gold! I classify a good PR as one who understands how a journalist works and takes the time to get to know a journalist’s niche and specialist areas, before staying in touch with relevant information and news.” Nicola prefers to receive pitches and releases by email in the first instance ([email protected]), although she is also happy to be contacted on twitter, “if it will fit into 140 characters!”
As a freelance journalist, Nicola believes social media is both important and useful. “I use twitter (@thefitwriter and @nicola_joyce) to keep up with industry trends, new developments and who’s doing what. I make use of twitter when looking for case studies, expert comment and interviewees and find it helpful for maintaining good relationships with PRs, editors and brands.” Nicola also blogs at http://thefitwriter.wordpress.com/ and gets both copywriting work and journalism commissions through her blog: “I do admit however that the blog is mostly a creative outlet for my own ramblings about fitness training, nutrition, industry events and recipes!”
Nicola is available for commission or collaboration and welcomes contact from PRs, editors and blog readers. Her website is http://www.nicolajoyce.co.uk/ and her blog is http://thefitwriter.wordpress.com/.
