Journalist Spotlight: Danny Brogan
On March 26th 2012 Danny Brogan joined Pocket-lint as contributing editor, working on the news team for the consumer tech and gadgets site. After graduating with a post-graduate diploma from the London School of Journalism in 2006, Danny worked as a music journalist for a free weekly magazine before landing a job at Mobile Choice, where he spent a large part of his time playing with and reviewing the latest mobile phones and tablet devices. With over six years’ journalistic experience, four of which were spent as reviews editor at Mobile Choice, he has also written for The Independent, Real Travel, Sport.co.uk and Gambling Online in a freelance capacity.
Danny believes that “social media has become one of the most important tools to a journalist, particularly Twitter. Used in the right way you can gather stories, build relationships and keep on top of what the day’s talking points are. It also provides a great platform for broadcasting your own work, as well as finding YouTube clips of a panda sneezing and alike.”
“Pocket-lint is right up there at the forefront of consumer tech sites, so it’s a great opportunity to reach a wide audience. The team pride themselves on breaking exclusives as well as interacting with the readers, both of which I’m keen to do. I hope that I’m able to help build the brand further, while of course I’m ambitious enough to want to raise my own profile too,” says Danny.
Danny’s Advice to PRs
“If it’s time sensitive or something of an exclusive then telephone is best, otherwise email.
“A brief overview of what it is you are pitching and why it is relevant to me (in this case Pocket-lint). My advice is as above; know if the pitch is relevant. Also make sure everything is ready. If a press release says images are available I expect that to be the case. Otherwise I could find myself in a situation where the story is written and ready to be published yet I can’t, as I have no pictures.
“Other than that say hello. I firmly believe that despite beliefs to the contrary, hacks and flacks are integral to each other’s line of work.”
