Father’s Day Special: Speedy Spotlight with Yorkshire Dad
An interview with Karl Young, author of the daddy blog, Yorkshire Dad and a PR executive by profession. He spoke to us from both a blogger and marketers’ perspective of managing expectations and building relationships for effective content marketing partnerships.
Why should people read your blog? What makes it different? People should visit and read my blog because I have begun my journey into fatherhood and regularly blog around my experiences and the joys of countless sleepless nights. I am also a passionate about golf, all things innovative and family days out. So there is a little something for everyone!
How do you measure the success of your website? Besides the comments and page views I personally measure the blogs success through the interactions I get on social media. There is nothing better than chatting to someone with a genuine interest in what you have to say.
What’s your favourite blog and why? I have two. The golfer in me is glued to the Three Guys Golf Blog and the father in me is always looking on Dadz Club.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a blog? Throw yourself in at the deep end as it is the only way to learn what works well. Always put aside time to write your content every week and rely to any comment and or mention you get on social media. You should always write around what you love and never worry about impressing others.
How do you work with marketers and PRs? As a content and online PR executive myself I understand the value of good communication and honest relationships. I love hearing from anyone and I will always give them the time of day should they be genuine and offer something interesting and relevant to me and my audience.
Who do you work with in brand marketing? PRs? SEOs? Anyone else? I have and am open to working with a wide range of people from any industry. Most recently I have worked with a global homeware retailer, a cancer charity, a farm, a phone accessories company, a florist and a well-known national postal service.
What can marketers do better in working with you? I always ask marketers to get to the point and be honest. I dislike it when someone sends me essays – emails should be short and sweet.
What was your blogging highlight of 2013? I ran a competition to give away a Karl Pilkington DVD and received over 350+ entries.
What currently big in your blogosphere? The blogosphere is going crazy for father’s day and the world cup, particularly DIY gifts and world cup party ideas. It also seems that people are warming back up to interviews with brands, celebs, bloggers and friends.
