Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself and how you got into blogging? I owned a PR company when I was in my twenties. Having worked in that industry for many years I wanted a change but I didn’t know what that was. My partner had started designing websites and one day I was exploring London when it suddenly occurred to me to start a blog so I could write about my two main loves – Interiors and London, hence the blog name ‘Homegirl London.’ Three weeks later I had my website and was officially a blogger! I don’t like to over-think anything, I prefer to get stuck in and learn on the job.
Can you tell us about your blog, and what makes it different? My blog covers restaurants, places to visit in London, London shops and products I love. My content is always positive, for example, If I eat at a restaurant and it isn’t up to scratch I don’t write about it.
What do you most like about being a blogger? I’m in a lucky position because I don’t need to make money from my blog so I write about things I love rather than having to compromise. Having owned a PR business and worked at large PR agencies I wanted to do something creative without having to work with other people. The only person I ask for help is my partner who is a web designer who is a whizz on the technical side. Everything else I do myself which suits me. I am someone who has an idea and wants to put it into action immediately. Being a blogger is the perfect job for me, it’s creative and I can do what I want, when I want.
What is the biggest challenge about blogging? Wading through the spam and scam emails. The internet can be incredible and irritating at the same time.
When did you start to take an interest in London Lifestyle? I love London and enjoy passing on information to other people about great restaurants, walks and places to visit. When I was younger I wanted to create my own magazine. With a blog, I can create content and reach thousands of people with little investment.
What makes London special? London is ever evolving. I travel a lot and have never found anywhere else I’d rather live. We have it all, the perfect mix of urban concrete and wide open spaces, incredible shops and amazing restaurants. It’s the best place in the world to live and visit (in my humble opinion!).
Where do you find the inspiration for your blog posts? I never run out of inspiration. I have to contain myself sometimes because ideas pour out. Now, I just try and write about the restaurants I have eaten at and the places I have explored plus a few features about homes and interiors.
How often do post content on your blog? I tend to write one article per day Monday to Friday and work one week in advance.
Do you follow any other blogs? I follow other blogs on social media but don’t read them. I don’t like to be swayed by what other people write. Besides, I don’t have the time. I am busy writing SEO copy for websites, writing content for clients and training clients how to use social media.
Once you’ve got the followers how do you keep them? I post regular content and promote via social media on a regular basis. If followers email me a question I try to answer the best I can.
Where do you see your blog in the next five years? I never plan beyond a week at a time. If I enjoy blogging I will keep on doing it. If one day I get up and I have lost my passion I will stop doing it and find another creative outlet.
