Blogger Spotlight: Cat Meffan, Imperfect Matter
As an ex gymnast/dancer and current jewellery designer, Cat Meffan’s mission is to enjoy a healthy life of her own while trying to help others make positive changes to theirs. Her blog, Imperfect Matter chronicles the ups and downs of her own personal fitness journey. Recently featured in our fitness and exercise ranking Cat chats to us about why she is honest about her life as a blogger, how she likes to work with PRs and travelling to Sark Island with Nike.
Why should people read your blog? What makes it different? Imperfect Matter is a wellbeing hub. I think what sets it apart is that even though I’m a qualified yoga teacher and I blog about yoga a lot, I actually have a love of many other sports and types of fitness, along with my love of food, travel and my own personal fitness journey. I’m also very honest about my life before and as a blogger now – I think people like that.
How do you measure the success of your website? Obviously numbers are great and I look at the analytics of all of my channels, but for me it has a lot to do with how proud I am of each post and how it makes me feel. Ultimately Imperfect Matter was born to help motivate me and even though I absolutely love that it helps to inspire and motivate others, I always think ‘what would I want to read?’, ‘which brands would I want my favourite blogger to partner with?’
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a blog? Just do it! At the beginning even I wasn’t sure who on earth would want to read what I have to say, but over time people really started to engage with the blog and my social channels. It can be scary putting yourself out there to the world wide web, but a little confidence and a thick skin will see you through.
How do you work with marketers and PRs? Email is the best way to reach me and do chase if you don’t hear from me. I try to have one admin day every week, so if a PR needs to get hold of me for a project and needs an answers asap, just try to make me aware that you need a reply pronto.
How do you use social media to promote and share content? What are the challenges? Every blog post will get a minimum of two tweets and will always have an Instagram post to promote it. If it’s something I really want to push then I’ll use the URL space in Instagram to direct people to a particular post. I also always Snapchat when a blog post or video has gone live. The challenge is making sure the content is fresh across all channels. When I shoot for the blog, I’ll try to make sure I have a different image for Instagram and Twitter, that isn’t duplicated in the blog post.
What can PRs do in working better with you? Know my name and know what kind of thing I blog about. You’d be surprised by the amount of people who either get my name completely wrong, or just call me Imperfect Matter.
What has been your blogging highlight? There have been so many, it’s hard to pick! I honestly feel so grateful to be in the position I am, I’ve worked so hard for it and I still have moments every day when I can’t believe some of the experiences I’ve had. I think one of the best was going to Sark Island with Nike and the most amazing group of people. I’ll have those memories with me forever.
What will be big in your blogosphere in the coming months? Can’t say I’m a fan of that word! ;) But I have so much coming up, some exciting travel destinations like Croatia and Thailand and I’ve got some awesome brand collaborations happening soon. People will have to stay tuned to the blog to find out what they are!
